Cold season in Brașov: the emergency kit for your car and useful contacts for quick calls

Winter Season Checklist: mandatory equipment, practical gear, pre-trip checks, and necessary information for a quick call.

A good winter kit is not a collection of items thrown in the trunk. It is a simple system that helps you see, signal, stay warm, communicate, and wait safely if your car can no longer proceed.

During the cold season, a weak battery, a flat tire, veering off the road, or a blocked road can become more difficult due to the cold and reduced visibility. Preparation begins before departure: check your car, adapt your equipment to the route, and save the data you will need to quickly transmit if you request help.

What is mandatory and what is recommended

In Romania, vehicles circulating on public roads must have an approved first aid kit, two reflective triangles, and an approved fire extinguisher. Periodically check the integrity, expiration date where applicable, and access to these items; equipment buried under luggage is of no help in an emergency stop.

Winter tires are not tied to a fixed calendar date. The Romanian Auto Registry specifies that the obligation applies to roads covered with snow, ice, or black ice and that tires meeting the legal requirement are marked M+S, M.S. or M&S. Checking pressure, wear, and approved dimensions remains as important as the marking.

Minimum legal layer

  • approved first aid kit;
  • two approved reflective triangles;
  • approved fire extinguisher;
  • tires suitable for winter conditions when the road is covered with snow, ice, or black ice.

Practical layer for cold and waiting

  • reflective vest and flashlight, ideally with spare batteries;
  • warm gloves, hat, blanket, and an extra coat;
  • ice scraper, snow brush, and de-icing solution;
  • windshield washer fluid suitable for forecasted temperatures;
  • car charging cable and charged power bank;
  • water, non-perishable snacks, and essential personal medications;
  • foldable shovel and a means to increase traction, chosen for the route;
  • cloth, tissues, sturdy bags, and appropriate footwear.

Not all items keep well permanently in the car. Cold reduces battery performance, some liquids freeze, and food and medicine have their own storage conditions. Perform a monthly check during the cold season and before each long trip.

Visibility kit: to see and be seen

Completely clean the windshield, windows, mirrors, lights, and license plates before you leave. A small scratched slot in the windshield does not provide the necessary field of vision. Keep the ice scraper and gloves in an accessible place in the cabin, not under luggage in the trunk.

If a stop occurs on the road, hazard lights and signaling must be used according to the situation and traffic rules. Do not automatically get out of the car in a fast-traffic area or one with reduced visibility. Evaluate barriers, the shoulder, and traffic direction, then follow the instructions of authorities or the contacted operator.

Energy and communication kit

Your phone is a map, flashlight, call channel, and location source. Keep it charged and save the towing service number in advance. A power bank helps, but it needs to be charged and protected from excessive cold. For isolated routes, also write down important contacts on paper.

Data to have ready for your call

  1. Exact position: share the GPS pin and state the road, approximate kilometer, direction of travel, and nearest landmark.
  2. Car: make, model, color, license plate number, and engine type.
  3. Problem: flat tire, battery, warning light on, accident, locked wheels, or veering off the road.
  4. Access: specify if you are in a parking lot, on a narrow road, on a slope, in snow, or in an area with height restrictions.
  5. Vehicle status: can it be put in neutral, does it steer, brake, and are the wheels free?
  6. People: how many passengers there are and if there are children, elderly, or people with medical needs.
  7. Destination: the service station or address where the car needs to be transported.

Sample message for an efficient call

"I am on [road], heading towards [direction], near [landmark]. I have sent the location. The car is a [make and model], the problem is [symptom]. The vehicle [can/cannot] be moved and there are [number] people. I need [assessment/assistance/flatbed] to [destination]."

Car inspection before a cold journey

  • check tire pressure and condition when cold;
  • test the battery if it starts with difficulty or is old;
  • check lights, wipers, and windshield washer fluid level;
  • maintain sufficient fuel or a reasonable range reserve;
  • clear snow from the roof and lighting elements;
  • check the forecast and route conditions from official sources;
  • tell someone your route and estimated arrival time when going to an isolated area.

If the weather deteriorates beyond your car's capacity or your level of experience, postponing departure is a safety decision, not an inconvenience.

If you get stranded in the cold

  1. Stop as safely as possible and make the vehicle visible without unnecessary exposure.
  2. If there are injured persons, immediate danger, or the car dangerously obstructs traffic, call 112.
  3. Send your location to a trusted person and the assistance operator.
  4. Conserve your phone's battery: reduce brightness and avoid power-intensive apps.
  5. If the engine is running while you wait, ensure the exhaust pipe is not blocked by snow and do not run the engine in an enclosed space.
  6. Do not leave on foot without a safe destination, proper equipment, and conditions that allow travel.

Roadside assistance and flatbed service in Brașov

Urban roads, uphill sections, and routes to mountain areas can have very different conditions on the same day. When requesting assistance, communicate if the vehicle is on snow, on an incline, off the road, or in a hard-to-access location. These details help in choosing the appropriate intervention.

Services that can be requested, depending on the situation and availability, are on-site roadside assistance and vehicle transport on a flatbed. Confirm the operation and cost before the crew is dispatched.
